Adoption is the legal process whereby a legally recognizable parent/child relationship is created. The adoption process can involve a single person adopting a child; a married couple adopting a child; a step-parent adopting a child; or a person adopting a family member and biological child.

In New York State, the adoptive parents may receive physical custody of the child to be adopted and be appointed temporary guardians before the adoption is finalized. Once the adoption is finalized, this new relationship is legally recognized as identical to that existing between the biological parent and the biological child.
